Topic Explorers, Many answers
Topic Explorer and Many Answers are authoritative websites created by the National Library of New Zealand for school students. They provide information and links to over 650 topics considered of high interest to primary and secondary schools. While there is a focus on New Zealand-related topics, many of the websites listed are relevant to schools across the world.
By clicking on the Download link, you will see a list of all websites in the collections. You can pick and choose which records you wish to download for importing into your catalogue. These records are available to all SCIS subscribers. They offer a great and simple way to add value to your reference collection and, best of all, they are free.
Reading Australia (free)
Reading Australia provides free, quality resources that make it easier for teachers to promote Australian titles. Curriculum-mapped units of work introducing Australian titles are written for teacher, by teachers. These are complemented by the Garret podcasts of author interviews.
SCIS has records for the units of work, divided into two collections – Primary and Secondary, as well as records for the podcasts. These can be added to your library management system to make them more discoverable by teaching staff.
Websites & apps (free)
Each issue of Connections, SCIS quarterly magazine published by SCIS, contains a regular segment listing new educational apps and websites. A new downloadable collection of records is added here everyone month.
e-Books (free)
Collections of Gutenberg titles and Interactive fiction available for download make a useful addition to the records in your library system.
Digital videos (free)
Here you will find records for the ABC Education Storytime collections. These are short videos of picture books being read by teachers and authors, including some read in Audlan.
Subscription digital collections
ClickView digital video library (subscriptions)
SCIS creates records for most digital videos produced or distributed by Clickview, an educational streaming service that supports specific curriculum objectives. ClickView provides SCIS with a monthly list of titles to catalogue, these are the ClickView Libraries Content Update digital videos.
Records are grouped into primary or secondary school resources. You can download the monthly update batches as they become available.
ClickView Exchange videos are not included in these downloads. Records for ClickView exchange titles can be requested through the SCIS online cataloguing request system.
ClickView is a subscription-based service, so videos will not be accessible to all SCIS subscribers. Some educational jurisdictions have negotiated a bulk subscription for their schools. As the access URL (weblink) is unique for each school, you will need to add the link to your catalogue so students can acquire them seamlessly through your library management system.
ePlatform Digital Libraries (subscription)SCIS creates records for ebooks and digital audiobooks listed in Wheelers’ monthly blog post titled ePlatform One shared collections. The SCIS records are organised into collections of primary or high school ebooks and audiobooks, and again by country (United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia) to reflect the different collections distributed by Wheelers. These collections are updated monthly.
These collections do not reflect every ebook or audiobook title distributed by Wheelers, just the titles in ePlatform One Collections. The titles in these collections are available through other digital content platforms. Records for ebooks and audiobooks not in these collections can be requested through the SCIS online cataloguing request system.
As the access URL (weblink) each ebook or audiobook is unique to individual schools, you will need to edit the records to add the link so students can access them seamlessly through your library management system.
National Library of New Zealand – EPIC Resources
