If you are new to SCIS or using our new website for the first time, you can check out our brief introductory video for a quick look around the website.
There are two ways of downloading SCIS records into your library management system (LMS). The first method is logging into the SCIS website and downloading a file of records, then importing it into your LMS. The second method is enabling Z39.50 (also known as Z-cataloguing or rapid cataloguing) access between SCIS and your LMS, allowing you to search for SCIS records directly from your LMS.
Downloading records from SCIS
There are four main ways to search and download records from SCIS, depending on your workflow and the type of resource you wish to catalogue:
- Quick download
- Downloading records in the SCIS catalogue
- Downloading records from SCIS collections
- Downloading records of digital resources
You can also check out our short video Downloading records in SCIS to see how to use the Quick Scan download page.
Using Z39.50
Z39.50 is a protocol that allows you to search and download catalogue records directly within your library management system. Please see What is Z39.50? and How do I set up Z39.50? for more information. Please note this function is not available for library studies students or free trial users.
SCIS Authority Files
SCIS Authority Files provide a richer search experience, directing users to all relevant resources in your library. They provide authorised terms for variations of name and subject headings, with See and See also references.
If you have a subscription to Authority Files, you will be able to download these from the Authority Files tab in the logged in section of the SCIS website.
Please see What are SCIS Authority Files? and How to download Authority Files.
SCIS cataloguing
SCIS provides a cataloguing service for resources that have not yet been included in the SCIS database.
You can make an online cataloguing request for physical and digital resources not yet catalogued by SCIS.
Your profile
Please ensure that your profile information is kept up to date and that your settings are set up as per your preferences.
Please note: preferences in your SCIS profile do not apply to records downloaded through Z39.50.
